PROFILE

Jersey Royal came into existence in January 2004 with a capitalisation of £8.5 million. By bringing together the entire Island’s historical potato marketing organisations and five of Jersey’s premier growers into a single new company, a significant step has been taken towards securing the future of the Jersey Royal as the leading brand of British new potato. The company is Island based and committed to ensuring that the Jersey Royal brand remains in the ownership of the Islands people. Maximising on market potential and with economies of scale in production, processing, buying and administration, this has produced many benefits for everyone involved as well as the end customer.

Annual turnover is now around £23 million with some 30-35,000 tonnes of potatoes being exported on an annual basis. The total acreage of potato production in Jersey is approximately 2170 hectares and of this area Jersey Royal farm approximately 1800 hectares.

The company employs 600 staff at peak times, with a core of 80 full time staff. We are fully committed to a training and development programme for all staff, with equal pay and opportunities and great emphasis on health and safety. As an employer of large numbers of migrant workers we have careful checks on agency labour and all remunerations are in line with the Islands minimum wage levels. The supplied accommodation meets and exceeds Jersey’s approved high standards. The company is registered with SEDEX and has undertaken a third party ethical audit, the results of which are available to view on the SEDEX web site.

Focusing on brand development and with continued improvement in operating and quality standards we have created a “Centre of Excellence” for the production, handling and sales of Jersey Royal potato. The company is totally customer focused with a marketing team who have a wide knowledge and years of experience supported by a dedicated technical team – all led by dynamic and active principals meeting the demands of the UK marketplace.

Jersey Royal currently operates from its headquarters at Southfork but has its main packhouse at Peacock Farm, as well as a number of operating sites from which the production teams operate.
