HARVESTING

The crop is lifted as an immature flaky skinned product and is ready for harvest at around 12-13 weeks. The first outdoor côtil crops are therefore harvested early in April, harvesting then carrying on through May and June with seed lifted late June /July.

The early côtils are ploughed out the ground using winch ploughs and then hand picked whilst on the early less steep slopes these are lifted with a tractor and small elevator digger and then hand picked.

Once these early fields are cleared the rest of the crop can be lifted using single and twin row harvesters into bulk 1 tonne bins. Loads of 6 to 8 bins are covered with tarpaulins and immediately sent to the packhouse for cooling. Loads can therefore reach the packhouse within 1 hour of lifting.
