The first Royals of the season have been dug
The first Royals of the season were dug at the start of the week.
The potato plants around the outside of the greenhouse, and around the posts all have to be dug by hand with a fork.
Once the rows have been opened it is possible to use a small harvest machine on the back of a mini tractor that lifts the plants and lays the potatoes on the ground to be picked up.
The baskets of potatoes are carefully tipped into sacks to be taken back to the pack house where they are graded into mids and ware for the wholesale market.
