Indoor planting

The indoor crops are lifted from around the middle of February, and are used to supply the wholesale markets where they earn a premium.

Indoor planting is another time-consuming and labour intensive operation that needs a lot of care and attention.

The ground is prepared and then rows marked out before the planters plant the seed.

The seed is then covered using the crawler as above.

These plants are slower growing due to the short days, and so can take up to 12 - 14 weeks to be ready.

In the same way that planting is staggered, so is harvesting to ensure a steady supply of potatoes into the market each week leading up to the first of the outdoor crops.
