Indoor planting

Planting began earlier today for the first crop of Royals that will be ready to dig at the end of February.

The Jersey Royal Company grows 32 acres of indoor potatoes each year that are planted sequentially over a period of about 8 - 10 weeks.

The seed potatoes are all planted by hand and then covered using a crawler.

The protected crops are slower growing than those planted in the New Year as the days are shorter.

There is a carefully worked out planting programme to coincide with expected demand in the early weeks of the season, and these are principally used to supply wholesale markets before the first of the outdoor crops are ready to dig.
