Sampling is key to monitor the health of the soil

The Jersey Royal Company farms about 3,500 acres on an annual basis that is spread over up to 1,800 fields.

Soil sampling has been a critical part of what we do for a number of years to monitor and control potato cyst nematode activity, on top of testing for pH as well as N,P and K.

This year in order to improve the accuracy of tests the Company is using a Quad bike and GPS mapping to ensure that going forward core samples will always be taken from the same places.

A field is mapped, and samples are taken across the whole area. This will provide more consistency to make annual comparisons.
