Indoor planting

Indoor crops of Jersey Royals are planted from the end of October. A certain area is planted each week up to the end of the year when all focus turns to planting outdoors on the côtils.

The earliest Jersey Royal new potatoes of the season are all grown under glass or in poly tunnels. This is our 'protected' crop, and is carefully managed until it is ready to lift from the end of February.

All of the potatoes are planted by hand into furrows that have been prepared using a small crawler.

The same machine is then used to cover the seed again.

The crops are very delicate, so if there is a threat of frost then fleece is laid over the plants to protect them in the greenhouses. - You can see strips of this hanging on the greenhouse posts.
